The Mansion: Still home to treasures after 137 years

The goal is to buy right and sell right. That’s the mantra of Charles Skaugstad, owner of , 538 S. Gilbert St. in Iowa City. The Mansion is an interior design firm and furniture store housed in one of Iowa City’s fi rst mansions. “The interior of is always evolving, so that’s stimulating for us that our workspace changes almost daily,” says Mr. Skaugstad. “It’s a great space to work in; we love the history and respect it.” About 16,000 cars drive by the location each day, but likely few know of the building’s historical significance. “When the county bought the old library downtown for a senior center, they had this available and we bought it at a public auction,” he says. “The second-to-last bidder was going to raze it and put a QuikTrip on the corner. So we were lucky we got it.”
